Yoko Ohara has been practicing shiatsu since she graduated from European Shiatsu School in 2002 and still loves bodywork. Both receiving and learning bodywork have helped her feel more relaxed, grounded and focused, and made her realise how closely mind and body are connected.

Now she also practice Acupuncture and Tuina, having graduated from London College of Traditional Acupuncture. What she loves about traditional Chinese medicine, which Acupuncture, Shiatsu and Tuina are all based on, is its holistic approach; it treats the person as a whole rather than disease, and the cause of disease rather than its symptoms.

Chinese medicine draws on the keen observations of nature and human beings. Based on Daoism, it views the human body as microcosm of nature subject to continuous seasonal changes. As a practitioner, therefore, one needs to take into account the client's physical, mental and emotional aspects including his/her diet and lifestyle.

To tailor her treatment to your needs, she often incorporates Shiatsu/Tuina into Acupuncture and may use additional techniques: Moxibustion (to warm Acupuncture points to stimulate circulation), Gua Sha (scraping or spooning technique) and cupping, but she always discuss what would be more appropriate for you beforehand.

Although there are different styles of Shiatsu and Tuina, she applies Yoga like stretches or other manipulative techniques as well as deep pressure on pressure points with fingers, palms, forearms, or elbows in order to release any physical or emotional tension/pain, and help you become more aware of your own body and improve your posture. Generally speaking, Shiatsu is deeply relaxing and calming and Tuina is more invigorating. You remain fully clothed during massage (unless you also have Acupuncture).

Yoko is particularly interested in treating menstrual/fertility problems, menopausal symptoms and pregnancy induced conditions. Over the years she has also treated many musculo-skeletal problems and stress related conditions with Shiatsu. Both Shiatsu and Tuina are also beneficial for those who play sports regularly.
